Akita City and the prefecture around it, on the Sea of Japan side of Tohoku—the Kanto Festival in early August with its 12-meter lantern poles along Kanto Odori, paid seating and the yatai food villages, riding the Komachi shinkansen straight through from Tokyo, and local food like Inaniwa udon.
